Pegasus controversy: SC notice to Center and Bengal government on petition against formation of inquiry commission

The Supreme Court has listed the matter for hearing on August 25.

Pegasus Scandal: Supreme Court (Supreme Court) on Wednesday issued notices to the Central and West Bengal government on the petition in which Pegasus spy controversy The decision of the state government to set up a commission of inquiry to investigate the allegations of Pegasus Row has been challenged. A three-member bench of Chief Justice (CJI) NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Aniruddha Bose has issued notices to the Center and the West Bengal government on the petition and listed the matter for hearing on August 25.

Advocate Saurabh Mishra, appearing for the petitioner, told the bench that he has challenged the notification issued by the state government for the constitution of the inquiry commission on the ground of its jurisdiction. The bench said, “We are issuing the notice.” It is noteworthy that the West Bengal government has appointed former Supreme Court judge, Justice Madan B Lokur and former Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court, Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya as members of the Commission of Inquiry. The formation of this commission was announced by the state government last month. A consortium of international media has reported that more than 300 verified phone numbers from India were included in the list that were put up for possible surveillance using Pegasus spyware.
