On one hand you have a writer-director who has written films like Aks, Rang De Basanti, Kurbaan and Student of the Year and directed the Hindi adaptation of American web series “24” i.e. Renzil D’Silva. You must have dialogue writer Niranjan Iyengar who has written dialogues for many films of Karan Johar and Mahesh Bhatt like Jism, Paap, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and D-Day i.e. Niranjan Iyengar. Award winning actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Neena Gupta and Sakshi Tanwar. Be a producer like Sony Pictures Films India. And yet you make such a film that the audience can’t find any reason to watch it, then surely you are doing something wrong. After watching the movie “Dial 100” released on Zee5, it is fair to warn that the film is not made for the audience.
In the last few decades, the police number 100 has become known for saving lives and preventing crime. Due to the progressive police officers in some cities, this number works like a modern call center and the facility like real time live location is now visible on the computer in front. In such a situation, it has become very easy to trace calls and send a police control room van to the crime scene. Dial 100 is the story of one such call which is received by Police Inspector Nikhil Sood (Manoj Bajpayee) in his control room and a woman Seema (Neena Gupta) keeps threatening to kill her soul. Like a hardworking officer, Manoj tries to stop them, but this time Seema’s plan is to take advantage of the tussle between Nikhil’s wife Prerna (Sakshi Tanwar) and their son Dhruv (Swar Kamble). How Nikhil comes out of this trouble, can he save his deteriorating son and his taunting wife from the clutches of Seema, this is the conflict of the film.
The film has the qualities of being a thriller. It is good to hear the story. There are great actors. Manoj Bajpayee’s graph is going up and after the success of “The Family Man 2”, now the new generation has also got an idea of his acting power. Neena Gupta does not get a lot of work but since Badhaai Ho, new types of roles are coming to her too and she now has the freedom to choose the role. Sakshi Tanwar is the epitome of spontaneity. It is also good to see him acting because seeing him makes one feel at home.
The compulsion of the film is its writing. Coming to the point, so much time is wasted showing the cast of characters that when the mouse-cat game between Manoj and Neena starts, it ends in a very strange way and quickly. For thrillers with a one night story, the writer has to think through the entire film in his mind and then after writing, he has to edit it mercilessly so that more can be shown in the film in less time. In thriller films, the task of solving the mystery and reaching the criminal from there is important but Dial 100 has been missed here. Long writing and somewhat boring.
It is a bit difficult to see a weak story turn into a great film on the back of just good actors. A similar problem was also in Renzil’s first film, Kurbaan. Saif and Kareena’s love story had become so long that when the real story came out, it ended in a very easy way. Although Renziel also directed a web series named 24 in which the entire series is based on the events happening in 24 hours but it was not the original, it was just an adaptation. If the audience is ready to bear the brunt of being sympathetic to the characters, then Dial 100 can be seen. Manoj, Neena and Sakshi; All three are tremendous in themselves and they have done an even better job in this film. If the story had supported then this film could have been better. The ending of the film definitely makes you think and it is up to you to decide how much freedom parents should give to their children.
