After the Taliban occupation of Afghanistan, the number of refugees may increase in Iran and Turkey

The rapid capture of Afghanistan by the Taliban has become a major headache for neighboring Iran and Turkey. Both countries may have an opportunity to increase their influence, but both countries do not want more influx of refugees. This is because both the countries are battling the coronavirus pandemic and facing economic difficulties.

Analysts say it all depends on unknown factors—the Taliban taking a more liberal stance that could spur international cooperation or a return to the unbridled extremism that led to their overthrow on September 11, 2001.

Asli Aydintasbas, a senior member of the European Council (ECFR), told AFP that there is no doubt that the current situation poses a great risk to Turkey and Iran. If the Taliban returns to their old ways, both countries may suffer.

Both countries are already hosting large refugee populations. There are 3.6 million Syrian refugees in Turkey and 3.5 million Afghan refugees in Iran.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last week that he was ready to meet with the Taliban leadership to secure peace. Iran’s new radical President Ibrahim Rasi said the US military’s “defeat” in Afghanistan was an opportunity to bring peace to the country.

On Tuesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke of “positive messages” coming from the Taliban on the safety of civilians and foreigners, hoping they would follow up with positive actions.

But analysts say the Taliban takeover has robbed Erdogan of a strategic card he was eager to play. A proposal to provide military security at Kabul airport that could improve relations with US President Joe Biden.
